Traditional gender roles

Updated: Dec 24, 2018

Today in class we talked about traditional gender roles. One topic specifically that interested me was gender roles in music. We talked how in the 80’s and 90’s some male musicians broke gender norms.

Davis Bowie

Many male musicians challenged society by dressing in bright colors and wearing clothes that society has stated is “feminine“. They also broke gender roles by wearing makeup and painting their nails. How many of those kind of musicians we see today??? none. I think that if anyone in the media in today's society (U.S.) would dress like they're not supposed to they would get backslash.

Ezra Miller

This is the case of actor Ezra Miller, who has always made headlines for dressing differently. He has got negative and positive comments about his choice of clothing but he doesn't care. And he's showing that he's living his life and enjoying it by posing for famous magazine Plaboy. This issue of the magazine was very controversial because this magazine typically has a women on the cover and Ezra is a man. In today's society people see this as weird and non common and unacceptable sometimes. But i think clothes or makeup or nail polish doesn't define who we are. We should express ourselves however we want, without feeling like we're going to be the butt of the joke.
