Intercultural communication

Updated: Dec 24, 2018

Intercultural communication is an interesting topic that you won't understand unless you learn about another culture. This summer I went to Taiwan, Thailand and Qatar and it was the most fun and interesting experience I've ever been to.

Taiwan

Me and my friends were only staying for the day in Taiwan because we had a layover there our final destination was Thailand. So we had no idea what we were going to do the whole day because we the layover in Taiwan was a last minute decision. But when we got a map at the airport and went to the city without knowing the language. The majority of people that we asked for directions didn't speak english but were extremely helpful, they were never rude they were willing to help and which ever they could and that was amazing. We could tell that they're culture is to respect and help other people.

Thailand

After we spent the day there we got to Thailand later in the night and from the minute we got to the airport everyone was very helpful too. We went to a couple of islands, explores their temples and appreciated their culture. The locals were also very helpful and we could tell that they genuinely like to help tourist and didn't expect anything back. The country was amazing, the food was amazing, the people were amazing I had no bad things to say about Thailand. We stayed there for almost three weeks and on our way back home we had a layover in Qatar.

Qatar

I was a little bit nervous about going there because I had never been to a middle east country and this country has extreme rules. So before going there me and my friends already knew the dressing codes for women going to this country. We couldn't use shorts of tank tops because apparently the government of Qatar doesn't like women to show off is doesn't matter if you're a tourist you need to obey the law. When we got there and took the bus to the city I immediately noticed that the bus had preferential seats for ladies. When i saw that i thought it was interesting because here in the U.S. we have preferential seats for pregnant women, kids and the elderly. Another interesting thing was that the only women on the bus was me and my two friends the rest were males. I was actually a little scared about that because I was in strange country and I didn't know what could happen. After that we had a “hot” but nice experience. The weather was extremely hot 120 degrees and it was a little tiring sightseeing with pants and shirts (because we couldn’t show our legs and shoulders). But overall we had a good experience we got to go inside a mosque and wear a hijab and traditional clothes that are acceptable inside the mosque. This three countries offered rich cultures and we were blessed to be able to learn and experience them.
